Containment system is made up of...
Stages for getting a radio fence system:
Buying the Equipment. (Transmitter and receiver collar once you know what you need).
As technology becomes more advanced, it inevitably costs more. So there is quite a difference in price depending on what technology you decide to use - again I'll guide you as to what you may want to buy depending on your requirements.
Beware of companies selling retail kit at old fashioned prices! I only deal with companies you can trust and who have the best prices and provide good customer service.
With the advent of the internet, you can avoid paying hundreds unnecessarily.
Combine that with a slap-dash installation and you may end up with a bad deal - not good for the industry as a whole.
For cats, if you want the smallest on the market, Invisible fence brand is what you need. It's the smallest and lightest on the market.
Some brands are 'tall' which can leave a cat looking like it's lifting its chin all the time.
Neither the Invisible fence nor Petsafe brand have this issue.
If budget is an issue, Petsafe is unbeatable value for money, blowing many of the other brands out of the water.
I do a lot of cat systems and have developed this opinion on first hand experience.
Getting the equipment professionally Installed (Or self installing).
How the kit is installed will have a big effect, long term, to the effectiveness of your system.
You can buy the most fancy, heavy duty pro grade super cable that money can buy...but if this isn't fitted with your interests at heart, you can find yourself spending lots of money time and time again getting it serviced or adjusted as it keeps getting broken or the silicone joins can dry up if buried, get washed out if not upright and develop resistance.
When you have to turn up on site, decide the system layout, install it, train a pet and get off site before 'i'm a celebrity get me out of here' starts, the likely-hood is that your best interests will not be at heart. If you go with another company, have a proper walk around and see what your paying for, ESPECIALLY if they are wanting immediate payment.
There used to be a shop in Dorset called 'Flog it and Leg it' - think about that one!
When someone turns up and is gone before lunch...well the chances are, you now have a 'Friday' fence.
You might be spending a bit more money soon!
Don't be afraid to complain and challenge people - it your hard (for most of us) earned money!
Training the Dog or Cat.
How you train your pet can have a significant effect on how it understands the system.
Although it can be generalized, its unique to them and how they respond.
Its the most important yet under-looked stage of the whole system.
The training is simple, it has to be. However it takes time if you don't want to be cruel.
Dog training.
Dogs often need to be trained very slowly and gently.
I often tell my customers, they are going to be thinking 'Andrews crazy, this is such a waste of time' - I don't mind. Phone, text, Whatsapp all you like, the patient way is always the best.
Resist the temptation to get early results.
If you have a situation such as just wanting to stop your dog going into the flower beds, you might be able to use a reward based training technique, just using the sound feature with positive encouragement.
If its a bit more important such as stopping it digging under the fence or peeing on the box hedging, you can set the level to no more than an annoying 'Flea bite' sensation.
Should you be worried about your dog being shot by a farmer or hit by a car, you may have to increase the stimulas until it matches the drive excitement.
Again, do this over a number of days or weeks if need be.
And...resist the temptation to get instant results, be patient, not cruel!

Remember your doing this because you love your pet. Please be willing to put a bit of time in!
Cat training.
Cats need to be trained OUTSIDE and it adds a hefty chunk of time to the day.
There is a reason why some well known companies have a high failure rates with cats. Getting the cat training right, straight away is imperative. It can be very stressful training a cat. most of the time not.
Cat systems can sometimes be very difficult to install (properly).
Be patient if you're self installing and don't be shy to ask for help.
